Gwinnett County Fire Investigations




Fire Investigations is responsible for the in-depth analysis of current call volumes and trends. This information drives research-based decisions on operations and intervention strategies. This includes origin and cause investigation, classification of fires, and other emergency situations that endanger life and property. This section works collaboratively with the Fire Operations and Public Education sections to support investigative needs on incident scenes and provide feedback on origin and cause to enhance community risk reduction efforts. Fire Investigations also assists with internal affairs investigations as requested by the Fire Chief and assists the Employee Support and Training Division by conducting pre-employment background investigations of applicants.


Chandler Downing is an investigator with the arson unit. He started his career in public safety with the Gwinnett County Police Department as a patrol officer achieving Master Police Officer in 2021. Later in 2021 he started his career in fire investigations when he transferred to the Gwinnett County Arson Unit. He holds an advanced instructor certification and a firearms instructor certification.

Not an Alumnus?
In order to become a member of the alumni association, you must attend and graduate from a session of the Citizen's Police Academy.  Once you have completed the academy, you will be invited to join the alumni association. 
The Citizens Police Academy (CPA) is designed to educate citizens of Lawrenceville and Gwinnett County about their police department and how officers enforce local and state laws. The goal of the CPA is to create and develop a growing nucleus of responsible, well-informed citizens who have the potential to influence public opinion concerning police practices and the delivery of services.
